“Never once in my life had I dreamed of being in bed with a convicted killer.”
For almost six turbulent years, award-winning writer Diane Schoemperlen was involved with a prison inmate serving a life sentence for second-degree murder. The relationship surprised no one more than her. How do you fall in love with a man with a violent past? How do you date someone who is in prison? This Is Not My Life is the story of the romance between Diane and Shane—how they met and fell in love, how they navigated passes and parole and the obstacles facing a long-term prisoner attempting to return to society, and how, eventually, things fell apart. While no relationship takes place in a vacuum, this is never more true than when that relationship is with a federal inmate. In this candid, often wry, sometimes disturbing memoir, Schoemperlen takes us inside this complex and difficult relationship as she journeys through the prison system with Shane. Not only did this relationship enlarge her capacity for both empathy and compassion, but it also forced her to more deeply examine herself.

“This is not my life” will stay with me forever.I relate strongly to Michael Winter's review. As with us all, the search for love is a paramount requisite for the heart. The only thing that separates us is our ability to give more than we receive. Success is the essence of life.
From almost the beginning of the read I honestly did not feel this book was really meant to tell a story; rather, I understood it to be a very personal, in many ways tragic, journey for readers to share and I feel so privileged to have been invited along. For the author it must have been a journey ending in catharsis and self-realization. I will be reading more of her works.

This Is Not My Life A Memoir of Love Prison and Other Complications Diane Schoemperlen 9781443434201 Books Reviews
Loved this book. So well written. Insightful and thought-provoking. An interesting look into the Canadian penal system as well.
Okay read, wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
An interesting and well written story.
Well written. Easy read. The story is a bit unsettling but it is a very good book. I'm sure many women can empathize with the author - myself included in some of the ways.
Occasionally infuriating both because of the writer's myopic self-absorption and lack of psychological insight, (either into her self or others), as well as the book's mind numbing slowness and focus on irrelevant details. This intelligent, well-read, middle-aged single mother who never had a relationship that lasted longer than 5 years, never bothered, until this relationship soured, to enter therapy and look at the childhood forces that motivate her self-destructive patterns. The mind boggles. I give it 3 stars because of how it shed light on the Canadian prison system, its irrational choices, its infantilising effect on inmates, as well as the politics behind it all.
