From a small village in the Sudan to the slums of Mumbai, this story is a remarkable chronicle of humanitarian service and insight into places hardly imaginable. What begins as a simple desire to give back through charitable work becomes a fascinating tale of places where life is a constant struggle, and of the people who inhabit them. This true story records the journey of Elisa as she sets out on her own to give something back to the world, and how that process changes the people she meets, and ultimately herself.

Wanting to perform service at third world locations badly in need, she ends up spending half a year working in a hospital in a small village in South Sudan, followed by 8 months working in the slums of Mumbai.

This story delves deeply into the lives, situations, and thoughts of people living in conditions hard to imagine by those of us fortunate enough to have spent our lives in the comfort of western civilization. This is the story of many people and the incidents that happen along the way, some funny, some poignant, some tragic. On balance, though, it is a story of hope and the perseverance of the human spirit, and the joy and satisfaction that comes from helping those truly in need,

The Girl Who is Worth 100 Cows The story of a 14 month humanitarian journey to South Sudan and India eBook Elisa Divoux Steve Crounse

Marvelous! I'd highly recommend this engaging chronicle of a woman's humanitarian efforts to anyone who feels a need to discover, or re-discover, their life's purpose, or anyone who is having trouble finding it.

In this story that is comprised of Elise Divoux's blog chronicling of her journey that took her to Africa and later India, you'll be captivated by her tales of sadness and sorrow, bewilderment and doubt, and above all, compassion for the suffering and such devotion to her mission in life. The spot-on tellings of what everyday life is like far away in third-world country living conditions, is raw, honest, and told with genuine empathy for the inhabitants. In the midst of her teaching jaunts, you see the author as someone with a lot of chutzpah who is not afraid to go behind the scenes and put herself right where the action is; whether it's much less -than- luxurious lodging, befriending others on her journey, or just absorbing all of the culture at the cellular level (I'm reminded by some of the passages about why I could never rough it in hot, humid conditions where insects, infectious diseases and bacteria flourish-in Georgia, the bugs are plentiful and bad enough)

Some of the true stories about how everyday people really live will curl your hair, break your heart, and have a ton of respect for Elisa...she is someone clearly put on this earth to fulfill a grand life's mission! Bravo!

I am on page 98 and absolutely recommend this book to everyone. Its real, raw, enlightening and besides all that..Elisa, Thank you.
I loved this book, from the first entry to the last. Reading the first hand chronicles of Elisa's experiences stirred the desires of my heart to love others. I found the introspective commentaries after Elisa's return to the 1st world enlightening and though provoking.
I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking their path in life.
I loved this book so much that I bought several copies to offer it to friends I knew would be deeply touched. It is the story of Elisa who left a very comfortable and successful life to go help people on the other side of the world, in some of the poorest places on Earth. It is a spiritual quest, a beautiful gift, an offering of self. Elisa is confronted to terrible situations that make her re evaluate what really matters!
Written from the heart and with humor too, don't pass this beautiful book.
This book was simply amazing. I have had the pleasure and fortune of personally meeting its author, who without a surprise, is just as brave, passionate, loving, and determined as her book portrays. The struggles that Elisa has endured will never cease to amaze me. I appreciate that she doesn't sugar coat her experiences, and gives the readers complete insight to her experiences and what she was going through during those times. She is inspiring, and her goodness shines through. Although I had to read this book in short sections, over a long period of time, to not emotionally drain myself and to fully be engulfed in the lessons and experiences that Elisa showed us readers. I love this book and will highly recommended it to anyone who needs a reawakening about life.
I had the pleasure of volunteering in Haiti with Mercy Beyond Borders, where the author was country manager. I saw her actually living what I subsequently read about in the book. Courage is the word that keeps popping into my mind. Courage to do the things she did / does, courage to look inside herself to find her real self, and courage to share all that in her book. I thank you Elisa for sharing your adventures, and for being you.The world is a better place.
I met the author on an immersion trip to Haiti recently. I had been to Uganda near the Sudan border in 2007 where the refugee camps are located. When I learned she had spent time in South Sudan, I recognized this was a remarkable individual and had an important story to tell. I learned so much more about the real risks of going to war-torn Sudan and the indomitable faith one has to draw from, to stay positive in the midst of poverty and lawlessness. Her book beckons you to take this journey with her, body, mind and soul and you will get an accurate description of purpose, emotion and humor that suggests what life is like for humanitarians in the developing world.

The author, like her book, is intensely curious, insanely compassionate and motivating towards becoming aware and getting outside of your box. You won't want to put this one down. When you're done, you will want to give it to everyone you know. It will inspire you to take a journey of your own.

This is a very inspirational book about love, kindness, being powerful and at the same time powerless...It is about hope , loss, trust and mistrust.. , beauty and ugly of the human beings, birth , death, war , peace etc... Self empowerment and self confidence thoughts are present throughout the whole book, which makes it really easy to follow and joyful to read and also visualize and make ones mind present in the act of work and travel that Elisa is pursuing on her volunteering project .
Elisa brings about a lot of issues on human existence , pain , suffering , social values, love the question of happiness and existence of the human being on this planet.
The details of her amazing travel diary from the beginning starting with her volunteering in South Sudan, then the second part throughout India ( which is mainly a great travel guide to the wonderful places dipped in ancient history time ,not excluding all the foodie places she visits is mixed with funny words and her unique monologue makes all in all a very interesting book from which we all can learn and learn to create and question ourselves living a bit out of the box in this world full of so many rules , laws and regulations.
I loved it !
